The Villa dei Papiri sat at the edge of Herculaneum, overlooking the Bay of Naples, until Vesuvius buried it in 79 CE. When workers sinking a well hit the first architectural feature in 1750, what they found was the floor: a geometric pavement of concentric circles made from yellow giallo antico and dark gray africano marble, with dark green porphyry and red rosso antico arrows at the center. The original is now in the Getty Villa's Temple of Hercules.
