Ann Arbor in 1926, the year Michigan Stadium broke ground and the Law Quad opened. Peak construction-era Michigan.
Founded in 1817 — twenty years before Michigan became a state — the University of Michigan by 1926 was well into a building boom under President Clarence Cook Little. The Law Quadrangle (William W. Cook's gift, designed to mirror Oxbridge) had just opened. Michigan Stadium was being dug that same year. The bird's-eye in this map shows the Diag at its most classically collegiate, Angell Hall dominating State Street, and the still-compact core that would more than triple in size over the next century.
Michigan has the largest alumni network represented in the collection. For Big Ten faculty and Ann Arbor natives, this map does not need explanation.
