The Golden Dome and the stadium, together, in a single 1938 aerial — Notre Dame as most alumni remember it, rendered the year Knute Rockne had been gone for seven years.
Founded in 1842 by Father Edward Sorin, Notre Dame in 1938 was the campus that generations of alumni still picture: the Main Building with its Golden Dome (added in 1882), the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the grotto, and Notre Dame Stadium — then eight years old and already synonymous with Rockne's legacy. The bird's-eye perspective captures all of it in a single frame, which almost no other angle of the campus can do.
Notre Dame has one of the most recognizable campus images in American higher education, and a gift network — from graduates to priests to colleagues in Catholic higher ed — that moves these pieces quickly.
